How to clean a herbal infuser after brewing

An empty infuser is not always ready for the next cup. Small pieces of leaf can remain around the rim, while a lid used as a drip tray collects liquid. A simple sequence makes the whole set easier to care for: empty, wash as instructed, rinse, dry and inspect. This guide covers reusable kitchen accessories, not washing the herbs themselves.

How to clean a herbal infuser after brewing

1. Start with your model’s care instructions

Check the materials of the mesh, frame, handle and lid. A metal strainer does not tell you how to wash the complete set. Find the model name on the packaging or in your purchase history and read the maker’s guidance. Separate only parts designed to come apart; do not pull the mesh out of its frame.

For example, OXO labels its Tea Infuser Basket dishwasher safe, and finum gives the same information for BREWING BASKET M. These are product-specific statements, not a rule for all infusers. For another model, check permitted cleaning products, temperature and dishwasher placement separately. Ask the manufacturer if the instructions are missing.

2. Remove leaves without forcing them into the mesh

Once brewing is finished, set the infuser down and let it cool enough to handle safely. Empty liquid from the drip tray and dispose of the leaves according to your local waste rules. Empty the basket gently instead of banging it against the sink. Avoid knives or pointed tools for picking fragments out of tiny holes.

Inspect the rim, base and join between mesh and frame. Rinse away remaining plant fragments as directed for the accessory. When washing by hand, use a soft tool intended for dishes if the manufacturer permits it. Do not push your finger through the mesh or try to enlarge its holes.

3. Wash the lid and drip tray too

Wash every part that touched the infusion: basket, lid, drip tray and the vessel you used. Follow the care guidance for each component. If dish detergent is permitted, use it as labelled and rinse thoroughly afterwards. Do not automatically apply a kettle-cleaning method to an infuser’s fine mesh.

If discoloration remains, look for the maker’s recommended method for removing deposits. Colour alone cannot identify the cause. Do not guess a vinegar concentration or mix cleaning products. If an unusual smell or visible debris remains after proper cleaning, resolve the problem before using the infuser again.

4. Dry and inspect before putting it away

Arrange washed parts so they can drain and dry instead of closing a wet basket under its lid. Check the rim for trapped debris and the drip tray for remaining water. Store dry accessories in a clean place. Disposable paper filters should not be treated as reusable mesh baskets.

Before brewing again, inspect the mesh, handle and closure. A cracked frame, sharp edge or separating mesh needs advice from the manufacturer or replacement of the part; do not attempt repairs while brewing. Keep a short checklist nearby: leaves removed, all parts washed, detergent rinsed away, set dry, components intact. It helps make cleaning part of finishing the last cup.

Frequently asked questions

Can every metal infuser go in the dishwasher?

The mesh material alone does not establish that. Check the exact model’s instructions, including those for its lid, handle and other components. One product’s dishwasher-safe label does not apply to every similar accessory.

Are rinsing and removing deposits the same task?

No. Rinsing helps remove loose debris, while persistent deposits may need a separate method approved by the manufacturer. Do not replace care instructions with an improvised mixture of cleaning products.
